Energy and Environment

Georgia has been awarded $398 million in ARRA funds to improve energy efficiency, decrease fossil fuel emissions, and create jobs. The State Energy Program, the Weatherization Assistance Program, and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant will play important roles in decreasing total energy consumption and spurring economic growth. Georgia will also use increased ARRA funding to promote economic activity while creating sustainable and eco-friendly communities throughout the state. The Georgia Forestry Commission, the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will administer stimulus funds to related to energy and environment.

Georgia Forestry Commission

Wildland Fire Management - This fund source includes the following grants: Cogongrass & Invasive Plant Eradication, Dixon Memorial State Forest Wild-land Recover and Habitat Restoration; Tree Planting for Ecosystem Restoration and Green Jobs; Regional Longleaf Pine Restoration Initiative and Fuel Reduction, Enhanced Fuels Management and Community Wildfire Protection Plans and the Georgia Stewardship Revisit Prescribe Burn funding.

Georgia Soil and Wate Conservation Commission

Watershed Rehabilitation - This grant award is intended to provide technical and financial assistance to rehabilitate dams originally constructed with assistance of USDA Watershed Programs. Rehabilitation must extend the life of the dam and meet applicable safety and performance standards. Priority is given to dams that could result in loss of life if the dam should fail.

University System of Georgia

Clean Diesel Funding - This Project Grant award provides assistance to achieve significant reductions in diesel emissions in terms of tons of pollution produced and reductions in diesel emissions exposure, particularly from fleets operating in areas designated by the Administrator as poor air quality areas.

Clean Diesel Grant Program - (The State Clean Diesel program) This is a Formula Grant award, which provides assistance agreements to States to develop and implement such grant and low-cost revolving loan programs in the State as are appropriate to meet State needs and goals relating to the reduction of diesel emissions

The Water Quality Planning - These grant funds are used to determine the nature and extent of point and non-point source water pollution and to develop water quality management plans. States are encouraged to give priority to watershed restoration planning. EPA is requesting States to emphasize a watershed approach in developing their State workplans.

Clean Water SRF - State Revolving Loan Program will be used for low interest capitalization loans to provide assistance to wastewater, nonpoint source and estuary projects which create jobs and further the water quality objectives of the Clean Water Act.

Drinking Water SRF - These funds are awarded to Georgia for the Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Program will be used for low interest capitalization loans to provide assistance to water systems for capital improvement projects which create jobs and further the public health protection objectives of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Department of Natural Resources

Leaking Underground Tank - Program funds are to be used to provide resources for the oversight and corrective action for petroleum releases from federally-regulated underground storage tanks (USTs), as well as for enforcement activities related to such corrective action.  These funds are for corrective actions that can be implemented expeditiously and promote job creation and preservation in a manner consistent with the Funding Priority listed above, as well as necessary oversight of responsible party lead cleanups.

State Energy Program - The program provides financial and technical assistance to State governments to create and implement a variety of energy efficiency and conservation projects in order to provide leadership to maximize the benefits of energy efficiency and renewable energy through communications and outreach activities, technology deployment, and accessing new partnerships and resources.

Weatherization Assistance - This grant award is provides funding to reduce state and national consumption of energy while providing a safe, improved environment and enhanced quality of life for Georgia’s income eligible households.

  SAVANNAH RIVER ECOLOGY LAB (ARRA) - The Electricity and Energy Research grant will assist the state in developing cost-effective technology that enhances the reliability, efficiency, and resiliency of the electric grid, while enabling the effective utilization of emerging and renewable generation sources and promoting the rapid deployment and integration of advanced digital "Smart Grid" technology that is needed to modernize the nation’s electric delivery network for enhanced operational intelligence and connectivity.

The Efficient Appliance Rebates - This program will allow consumers to receive rebates when they buy Energy Star washers, refrigerators and other appliances.
